Legal Matters
Marijuana is not legal in Cambodia and police are beginning to take a harder line on it, although usually for their own benefit rather than a desire to uphold, the law. There have been several busts (and a few set-ups too) of foreigner-owned bars and restaurants where ganja was smoked – the days of free bowl in guesthouses are now in the past. Marijuana is traditionally used in some Khmer food, so it will continue to be around for a long time, but if you are a smoker, be discreet. It’s probably only a matter of time before the Cambodian police turn the regular busting of foreigners into a lucrative sideline.
This advice applies equally to other narcotic substances, which are also illegal. And think twice about visiting an opium parlour with an unfamiliar moto driver as it may end iwith you getting robbed after pausing out.
